God Without Religion reaches #4 on Amazon.com's bestseller list.
Albuquerque, NM - March 20, 2007 - Yesterday was Amazon Day for GWR and again, the principles in the book have proven themselves.
As we all know, we currently live in a society where an elite chooses which products to market, often not with the long-term best interests of the public or the best product in mind, but with what is the surest to make quick money.
Movies based on novels are budgeted to include funds to buy huge quantities of the novel, so marketers can say the movie is based on a bestselling book.
Publishing houses catapult their books to best-selling status with crony connections and media exploitation while independent presses struggle for every ounce of exposure for their titles.
Religious centralization of power is obviously dangerous, but so is publishing and media centralization because they too limit the public’s exposure to worthy ideas and potentially world-transforming products. Who might be our president, for example, if the office went to the one with merit instead of millions?
To wrest power from centralized power, we simply need to cease to distance our power. That sounds easy enough, but it usually comes with great sacrifice because our sense of self is shaped from birth to mandate a loss of power. Further, those who inspire on a large scale the sacrifice necessary to decentralize power our routinely murdered.
Yet a handful of people, dedicated not merely to a book but to an idea whose time has come, made the sacrifices necessary to catapult GWR to #4 on the Amazon bestseller list and #2 on its Movers and Shakers list.
I can’t speak for them and what motivated their sacrifice of both time and money, but for me the idea whose time has come is that we not only have always had the power, but we are ready to be responsible for it.
The media powers that be didn’t make a dime on GWR’s sales or exposure, and neither did I or anyone else. GWR sales go right back to getting GWR out there. That, to me, holds the promise of power to effect change. GWR’s success is what all success should be: our success, meaning a shared success that isn’t horded by a few or won at the cost of others suffering and ignorant.
More than even GWR’s ranking, which is its place in the sun of public exposure, I feel gratified to be a part of an effort, however small, to get our power back.
